Recently at my internship, my boss and I were having a discussion about cables and connectors and how those weren't the same thing. This really confused me and we began having an in-depth discussion on audio and video cables as well as a plethora of data cables. After this conversation we have come back to it time and time again, talking about specific cables at specific times.
I soon went down the rabbit hole of all the main (and some obscure) types of audio and video cables and connectors. Everything from DVI cables to RJ45 connectors, and a lot more.
Here are some of my rough charts and lists that I have made to help further my cable and connector knowledge. I had a lot of fun going deep into the rabbit hole of cables!!
A list of all cables (what you would hear them called in the wild at least), and some important categories they fall under, including connector types used. In many cases the connector type is simply called what the cable is called because of shorthand over the years. The best example of this is an HDMI cable and connector being interchangeable.
An exhaustive list of most a/v and data connector types.
A small list of cables and some different communication or protocol standards.
